UPDATE: Nevermind, Redbox just tweeted a code that looks like it will work for everyone: TEGJ6FD. Enjoy!
It looks like Redbox is doing something different with its free codes this month. Instead of sending out one code that everyone can use, they are sending separate one-time use codes to each user. So unfortunately, I won’t be able to share the code this month.
You can sign up here to get the free codes texted to you each month, and/or join the email list to get a free one-night rental.

It’s the first Monday of the month, so it’s time for a free Redbox code! It is good today only for a one-night rental. The code is QNGJ7KD. It expires at midnight tonight (October 5).

I’ve been remiss in failing to mention this before now, but better late than never, right? If you’re looking for some great, free end-of-summer (or early fall) entertainment, definitely check out the Shakespeare Theater Company’s free production of The Taming of the Shrew. It runs through September 12 at Sidney Harmon Hall (610 F St. NW in DC). I haven’t made it out yet this year, but I’ve been to these productions in the past and they are always top-notch.
You can pick up tickets in person on the day of the performance at the box office at Sidney Harmon Hall. The staff will begin distributing them two hours before curtain. Show times vary; check the calendar to see what day/time works best for you.
Full details are here.

Here are a few free and (relatively) cheap things to do this weekend:
Rosslyn’s I Love the ’80s film festival continues on Friday night with Short Circuit, one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. The show starts at dusk at Gateway Park at Lee Highway near Key Bridge, but show up early for ’80s-themed games and prizes.
On Sunday, head to the Gunston Arts Center for the Peruvian Festival of Arlington, which celebrates Peru’s Independence Day. The festival goes from 11AM to 6PM and features traditional Peruvian dances, music, and cuisine.
And finally, while I realize that this isn’t free, or even up to my usual standards of “cheapness” for this post, I really think that no summer is complete without a trip to Wolf Trap, and this is a great weekend to go. On Friday night, you can catch The Wizard of Oz on large screens, with the full score performed live by the NSO. And on Saturday night, you can once again catch the NSO performing the music of John Williams. Lawn tickets to these performances are $20. Pack your own picnic, bring a blanket to sit on, and don’t forget bug spray!

If you’re looking for something fun for kids, check out the Sterling Playmakers’ kid-friendly production of Aladdin Jr. There are shows on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening and a Saturday matinee at Sterling Middle School. Tickets are $5.35 and can be purchased online.
And for something completely different, on Sunday check out Arlington’s Mongolian Naadam Festival. This annual Mongolian sports festival features throat singing, cultural dance performances, sporting events for children, and a wresting competition.
